Hele’s School are celebrating the achievements of a group of year 12 students who, working with Babcock International engineers, have won the South West regional competition involving six schools and six partner engineering companies working on six different engineering problems.

The team consisted of Daniel Bailey, Matt Callaghan, Michael Sargent and Chris Vobish with Mr. John Lloyd and Mr. Huw Phillips as supporting teachers. They worked with Babcock engineers to solve a real problem that exists within the Devonport Dockyard dry dock facility. This was to design and model a mechanical and electrical device to remove and transport six tonne concrete dock blocks that are used to support ships that are being worked on in dry dock.

The team were able to make a conceptual model and presented their work to a team of judges and demonstrated their knowledge and understanding of the problem and their solution during a question session in front of their display and working conceptual scaled model. The team were highly praised by industry partners who were very impressed with their skills and knowledge and have returned back to school with a huge trophy having fought off strong competition from a number of other secondary schools.

In addition, Oliver Stone, a year 9 student, benefitted from a unique learning experience at Harper Adams University in Shropshire recently. Sponsored by the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board and delivered by an educational charity, The Smallpiece Trust, this 4 day residential offered a valuable insight into the exciting industry of engineering construction through a series of exciting, hands-on workshops and demonstration. Over the four days, over eighty students from across the country were mentored by real-life engineering professionals and guided through every stage of project development, from initial design ideas to final testing.
