You're Hired WinnersAfter Hele’s Post 16 student Amy Leverson was crowned Plymouth’s Most Employable 17 year old last summer, the new search is on….

140 Year 12 students from Hele’s School have recently taken part in the You’re Hired Challenge to find Plymouth’s most employable 17 year old. They were involved in team tasks, set by 2 local employers Balfour Beatty, and Bailey Partnership, to test their employability skills. The challenges required students to consider a range of proposals for a building project and to select the most cost and time effective plans, and to build a bridge using nothing but tape and paper to support the heaviest possible weight. After 2 intense sessions working together in small teams the students all congregated to hear what the employers had to say, and to consider their own participation in activities outside of academic studies, which support them on the route into Higher Education and Employment. The school runs its own Employability Award in the Sixth Form, and this will now be followed up through the Schools’ Post 16 tutorial programme as a follow up to the event. Through this programme , students are encouraged to participate in events such as peer mentoring schemes, the Duke of Edinburgh Award and work experience, to enhance CVs and prepare them for future employment.

Students welcomed the opportunity to work alongside these large employers, who in turn enjoyed the spirit of enterprise clearly evident throughout the day. Particular congratulations must go the 5 finalists who go forward to the final in June to find the next winner of the coveted title “Plymouth’s Most Employable 17yr Old” !
