New to Hele’s School this year is the opportunity for a number of students in Years Nine and Ten to undertake an extra-curricular after-school course in Latin. The ethos of the class is very much to enjoy learning the Latin language, to discover more about classical Roman civilisation and to be able to make links to English and our other modern languages. To give the students some tangible outcome for their studies, they will be entered, in the first year, for a Level 1 Certificate in Latin Language (equivalent to a Foundation GCSE) and in the second year for a Level 2 Certificate which equates to a full GCSE. It is our hope that the students will benefit from this extra subject which still remains primarily associated with grammar and private schools. The class has started to follow the renowned Cambridge Latin Course and the packed classroom has already seen the enthusiastic  students making some impressive early strides! Our thanks go to Dr Karen Stears at Devonport High School for Boys who has so kindly donated textbooks to aid our cause.

Principal, Justine Mason commented saying “this session is just one of many additional extra-curricular clubs and classes that we run after school at Hele’s, this just shows that Hele’s a great place to learn and a great place to grow and our students certainly seem to making the most of it”.
