Debating Competition

Tuesday, December 8th, saw our first foray into the world of competitive debating. Hele’s school played host to The English Speaking Union’s Mace competition – a national debating competition for schools. Truro School and Torquay Boys Grammar School were first up, debating the motion, ‘this house would only imprison violent offenders’. After a well-mannered but lively debate, Truro School emerged the victors. Hele’s school, whose team consisted of Alex Wood (year 9) and Rachel Skinner (year 11), were next, debating against two sixth formers from Kingsbridge Community College. Our motion was ‘this house would force the BBC to adopt quotas for the casts of all its shows’. Despite our inexperience in competitive debating, the Hele’s team won the heat to go forward to the second round. We were all so proud of Alex and Rachel, who showed such great skill and confidence. We are very excited about the next round!
