Year 7 students at Hele’s worked incredibly hard in the run up to the end of term to recycle as much as possible in preparation for their 4th Sustainable Gifts Fair. Over the past three years several thousands of pounds have been raised for local charities from gifts created from discarded items that would normally have been thrown away.

The students showcased their entrepreneurial skills at a packed Gifts Fair on Tuesday 15th December. This year, the year 7 students beat all previous records, raising over £2000 in one night! Each student was given £1 to purchase basic materials to turn ‘waste’ materials into desirable Christmas gifts, such as fruit bowls made from vinyl records, and hordes of reindeer made from logs and sticks with the obligatory dusting of glitter!

Principal, Justine Mason, said, “We are so very proud of our Year 7 students, their wonderful Head of Year, Mr Clemow, and the team of Year 7 Tutors.  Their considerable achievement of turning waste into profit for the benefit of local charities is inspirational.  Their endeavours capture the true spirit of Christmas in spreading joy amongst the community, looking after those less fortunate than ourselves, and of course ensuring we protect this wonderful creation, Planet Earth.  Besides all that, I managed to bag myself some fabulous Christmas gifts for loved ones and for a very competitive price!”
