A warm welcome awaited a small group of students on the first half of this year’s German Exchange Programme with Marienschule, Limburg an der Lahn, last week. Seven students from Years 11-13 travelled with Mrs Ayres into the Half Term break and stayed in families to experience the culture and language of our European neighbours at first hand. They spent two full days in school, and enjoyed a guided tour of Limburg (in German ,of course), double-decker train trips to Wiesbaden and Koblenz as well as being treated to a range of different experiences by their individual host families over the weekend. Students were matched by interests and, thanks to technology, many had had regular contact through social media or even spoken to their partners via Skype prior to the initial meeting at Frankfurt Airport. Mrs Ayres commented “our hosts were so welcoming, we settled quickly and early nerves were quickly forgotten.”  Students have now returned to England “wowed” by German food, full of idiomatic expressions (“ja, genau”)  and ready to tackle impending Speaking Exams with a renewed vigour, increased confidence and improved pronunciation! We are now look forward in turn to welcoming their German friends to Hele’s School and Plymouth from 12th – 19th April.
