Bene Factum to all the students who decided they wanted to study Latin. Not only did they want to learn the language but they wanted to take a final exam – and with an already busy school curriculum, all this would have to be done in their own time after school.

Joshua Clarke, teacher of English, runs the after-school sessions, and although he knew that the students were totally committed, never in his wildest dreams did he expect these exam results, which included eight A*s, ten As, four Bs and three Cs, certainly results to be proud of!

Josh commented “I started Latin a couple of years ago with the intention of it being a club for interested students, but I am delighted that it has become the fully-recognised subject area at Hele’s that it now is. After last year’s exam success, the 27 students who took exams this year, spanning Years 8-11, performed outstandingly, having studied the subject for such a short period of time. I am immensely proud of our classicists, and delighted that we are able to keep the Classics alive outside of their traditional home of the private and grammar schools! Many thanks must go to Dr Karen Stears at Devonport High School for Boys who has generously donated textbooks, and to the Roman Society of London for their monetary grant which has gone towards additional teaching materials.
