Design & Technology

Design Technology is an exciting part of the Hele’s School curriculum taught by eight experienced specialist staff who share their passion for the subject with learners. Pupils enjoy working in well-equipped teaching areas and achieve satisfaction from producing very high quality outcomes. Staff endeavour to create lifelong independent learners who have a passion for knowledge and are well equipped to enter the technological world of the 21st century.

All learners follow a challenging course throughout Key Stage 3 which teaches them how to work in the four major areas of Design Technology (Food, Resistant Materials, Systems & Control and Textiles). They are equipped with a wide range of skills in designing and making. Extensive use is also made of computer programs, in particular CAD (Computer Aided Design) packages and the associated CAM (Computer Aided Manufacture) equipment. KS3 has a two hour per week curriculum allocation, one hour spent in Resistant Materials or Systems & Control, one hour spent in Food or Textiles.

A variety of courses are offered at KS4 and all Year 9 students are encouraged to follow a Technology subject through the vehicle of mini options offered in the second half of Year 9. Current subjects include Engineering, Hospitality, Food & Nutrition and Resistant Materials. Several exam boards are used to deliver the Technology based subjects: AQA, OCR & WJEC. The department is always looking to deliver “what the customer wants” so new subjects are constantly being investigated for their suitability to a particular cohort of learners.

The department currently offers two Post-16 courses: Engineering, Product Design and Hospitality. With the advent of compulsory education now lasting until Year 13 the department is currently considering a range of additional courses to offer Post-16 learners.
