Welcome to Sociology

..the study and classification of human societies.

Karl Marx

..the study of social institutions and processes.

….the study of the social lives of humans, groups, and societies, sometimes defined as the study of social interactions.

SOCIOLOGY IS..

…the study of society and how it shapes people’s lives, including their values, beliefs, morals, their understanding of right and wrong and attitudes to ideas and people.

….is the science that attempts to understand social action and to explain its course and effect.

….the study of the individuals, groups and institutions and their relations that make up human society.

In Sociology we aim to encourage student's curiosity and interest in the society around them. Society affects us all directly, it shapes our lives, it shapes our interactions with other individuals, groups and institutions. Therefore, for anyone who has ever questioned why things are the way they are, Sociology is a 'must study' subject. Sociology gives a clear insight into the working of society and social interactions. The skills we aim to develop and nurture in our students, although not exclusive to Socology, are very important for leading an enlightened life in the modern world, such skills as, critical thinking, analytical and evaluative skills, interpretation and application of information and independent research skills, to name but a few. Students do not need to have studied Sociology at GCSE to enrol on the course. We do, however, expect students to work hard, read widely and an open-minded approach is essential for any student to get the most out of Sociology. Students must have an interest in people and how they live, how they organise themselves, what they say and do and what their views and attitudes are based upon.
