The Kidskope peer mentoring programme is a short-term project aimed at supporting young people who have experienced or who are experiencing conflict in relationships.  Over the last term, a small group of Year 12 students at Hele’s School have been trained by Mrs Whalley, Health and Social Care teacher,  to become peer mentors for younger students.  The Post-16 students have had the opportunity to use their study time creatively to work together to develop activities and exercises, which allow the younger students to explore their emotions around some quite sensitive topics.  The seven-week training programme enabled the students to develop a wide range of employability skills, such as learning to empathize, communicate effectively and work in teams.

Following on from the training, at the end of last term, the group of Hele’s Post-16 students planned and delivered a creative workshop with a small group of Year 8 students. This involved a range of different activities including games, role play, collage and mask making. The Year 8 students really enjoyed working with their mentors and showed enthusiasm for all of the activities, including eating pizzas kindly produced by Mrs Wooding, teacher of Hospitality and her Year 10 students. The workshop had a significant impact on the confidence of all the students involved and it was clear that the sixth formers understood first-hand the importance of thorough preparation and organization as well as being able to see the impact of providing positive role models.
