Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development (SMSC)

Hele’s School offers a curriculum which is balanced, broadly based and which:

  • promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society, and
  • prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

All Curriculum subjects promote student’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Explicit opportunities to promote student’s development in these areas are provided in religious education and the non‐statutory framework for personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE) and citizenship. A significant contribution is also made by school ethos, effective relationships throughout the school, collective worship, and other curriculum activities.

What is SMSC?

You may have heard a lot about SMSC in Schools and you may have wondered what it is all about. In this small article, we explain the background behind SMSC and what it means for our young people and school community. SMSC stands for the promotion and development of pupils; spiritual, moral, social and cultural sense of values within school. Within this, it is expected that schools will help instill fundamental British values into students as well. Although all of this completed with Personal, Social and Health Education and Religious Studies within the school, of late the government has seen it more important to teach the values of Britishness to all pupils. Therefore there is renewed emphasis within the work.

To this end, myself and other members of staff have been reviewing and auditing our SMSC practice within the school to ensure that we are providing excellent coverage. All departments have now completed an audit and we have mapped our practice across the wider school to include areas like assemblies, aspirations week, and the tutorial programme. We hope to give you regular updates about our SMSC work over the coming few months. At the moment however, be assured that much work is being completed in the following areas:

  1. To enable students to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence.
  2. To enable students to distinguish between right and wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of Britain.
  3. To encourage students to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely.
  4. Enable students to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in Plymouth, Devon and Britain as a whole.
  5. Further tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling students to acquire an appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures.
  6. Encourage respect for other people.
  7. Encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in Britain.
