Travel & Tourism

Why study Travel & Tourism…

This is an amazing course which offers students the opportunity to study a new subject at A level and at present is based 100% on coursework – completing 6 units (4 mandatory and 2 option units)  over 2 years. The units studied in Year 12 are: Unit 1 Investigating the Travel & Tourism Sector, Unit 3 The UK as a Destination & Unit 6 Preparing for Employment in Travel & Tourism. Then in Year 13 the final 3 Units are: Unit 4 Customer Service in Travel & Tourism, Unit 2 The Business of Travel & Tourism and a choice from either Unit 7 European Destinations or Unit 8 Long-haul Travel Destinations. Work is assessed in a variety of different formats from written reports to role play, creating and delivery an actual exhibition, presentations and display material to name but a few and where possible incorporates relevant  work experience especially for Customer Service.

These are wide and varied as the travel and tourism sector is one of the largest employers in the UK. Students I have taught have gone onto work in the Accommodation Sector running hotels to the Transport Sector. For instance working as Cabin Crew for an airline or involved in the cruise industry or studying Travel & Tourism or Events Management at University; and applying for careers in this field. In addition having studied this qualification either to A/S or A2 level; students can progress into employment, or undertake an apprenticeship as previous students have, either with a Travel Agent or selecting a Business Administration or hospitality based apprenticeship. Other students have studied Travel & Tourism to A2 level and used  the qualification to support their university applications to study a History or Geography degree; as it is a subject they enjoyed and excelled in.

Visiting local visitor attractions such as National Aquarium Plymouth, Paignton Zoo, Dartmoor Zoo is a vital part of the course as is listening and engaging with a  variety of guest speakers from Royal Caribbean, Thomson Travel Agent, Premier Inn to name but a few.  In addition a one day Cabin Crew training course is offered held at  Flybe Airport, Exeter which comes with a certificate of attendance and is ideal for anyone considering a cabin crew career. Finally every year a 2 day overnight residential trip is organised to London staying in a quality hotel, visiting the theatre and various attractions such as Madame Tussauds, London Eye, Harry Potter World, Afternoon Tea & various museums. The Royal Marines have also been into school and helped deliver a Teamwork challenge for Year 12/13 Travel & Tourism students.
