World Book Day

World Book Day is a charity that operates in the UK and Ireland. They change lives through the love of reading. It will be celebrated on the 2nd March 2023 this year offering every young person a free book token so every child can exchange it for a book at their local book shop no matter your background. Reading for pleasure is one of the biggest indicators of a child’s success. World Book Day is marked in over 100 countries around the globe.

History:

The first World Book Day took place in 1997 to encourage children to read. World Book Day founder, Baroness Gail Rebuck, says “We wanted to do something to reposition reading and our message is the same today as it was then – that reading is fun, relevant, accessible, exciting, and has the power to transform lives.”

Vouchers:

World Book Day vouchers can be exchanged at any of these retailers, Asda

Blackwell’s, Morrisons, Sainsburys, Tesco, Waterstones, WHSmith and The Works where you will receive a book. They are valid from Thursday 16th February until 26th of February.

Having fun:

The most important thing is that the day is fun and that children have the chance to talk about what they’re reading. Many teachers in the past have dressed up as characters from their favourite book to celebrate the day and I’m sure we all remember dressing up as characters in primary school! It is also a great way to pick up reading recommendations.
