July 6th saw Heles School descend upon Brickfields for the eagerly anticipated annual Sports Day with 2015 lining up to be another entertaining year. All that was required was some pleasant weather. Despite an early downpour in the hours leading up to the start of the day, it turned out to be a warm and sunny day which added to the enjoyment for not only the competitors but the spectators as well.

Since 2012, individual competitors have been competing for their respective houses. Scott, Reynolds, Christie, Drake and Weston compete for points to gain dominance in the overall table. After Scott’s recent overall triumph, Scott were keen to get off the mark with some valuable points. Some of the highlights from the day included the Year 10 Boy’s 100m(A) race with a photo finish between Christie’s Joe Pinder and Scott’s Scott Wickens. After a thorough discussion between the officials, the victory was handed to Scott House. The Relay event also provided an enjoyable spectacle with team work and skill being required for the race.

Several sports day records were broken in 2015 throughout Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. Special congratulations to: Mia Kinchin (Year 7 Long Jump); Billy Bright (Year 7 Long Jump); Lucy Castle (Year 8 Shot Putt); Georgie Pocock ( Year 8 100m); Kiera Brooks (Year 9 Triple Jump); Ethan Greenwood (Year 9 Triple Jump) and Savanah Shepherd (Year 10 Shot Putt) who all broke Heles School records.

Despite varied results within each year group, there could only be one overall winner. Beating 2nd placed Weston House by 63 points were Drake. Taking the final podium spot were Reynolds with Christie and Scott finishing in 4th and 5th – in that very order. It proved a day of doom and gloom for Scott with no recorded overall finish higher than 4th place within each separate year group. However Scott’s mascot – Pete the Penguin, did make an appearance during the day along with his fellow House mascots to keep the crowd entertained as well as showing support for their houses.

2015’s Sports Day proved to be a very rewarding and satisfying day for all involved. The day aims to not only to provide a competitive sporting event but inspiration for aspiring young sportsmen and women. The day highlighted the team spirit and sportsmanship that makes up Hele’s School. 2016 hopes to be as equally as enjoyable.
