Christmas Traditions

Christmas Traditions

By Emma Bagshaw

There are lots of traditions at this time of year. Let me take you on a whirlwind tour of a few of the festive traditions! Merry Christmas and a happy new year!!!

Christmas Trees

A brief history…

The idea of Christmas trees first came to England from Germany in the Georgian period. German wife to King George III, Queen Charlotte, was said to have decorated a tree for her family in the 1790s.

Although this was where England first started to see the decorating of trees, the idea was popularised by Vitoria and Albert who loved Christmas. From then on, it has become a tradition in most households in Britain ever since.

Festive food

One of the highlights of Christmas Day must be the turkey with pigs in blankets, stuffing, and vegetables. Yum!

Whether you like a nut roast, duck, or seafood there is usually something for everyone on the table but, I dare say, who is the brussels sprout fan in the room?

Carols and choirs

In December, you will usually hear the voices of choirs at this time of the month. People bring joy and hope with their songs to celebrate the all-important day and welcome the new year.
