Who is Father Christmas?

Who is Father Christmas?

By Erin Bradley

The original meaning of Christmas.

Christmas is about the birth of God’s Son – Jesus. It is about how he came to give us love, hope and joy. That message doesn’t change from year to year. When there is so much bad news and devastation in the world, this is special tradition is worth celebrating! Christmas is one of the most celebrated holidays in the world. It is a religious festival that celebrates Jesus’ birth, however even some non-Christian countries follow the Santa Claus tradition. This shows that Christmas is for everyone no matter what you believe or how you celebrate.

Why is Father Christmas Red?

When you think of Christmas you probably picture a big man coming down your chimney, in a rosy-red suit with a big sack stuffed with presents on his back, but has he always been that way?

In the 15th century, he was pictured as a man dressed in sack-like clothing and greenery on his head. It was also believed that he went around on deer back. Have you ever heard of the holly and the ivy or a chocolate log? This tradition came from the pagans and how they saw Santa.

In different cultures, Father Christmas has been depicted as many different things, from a creepy elf-like figure to the big jolly man we know and love, or in a green suit instead of red.

How did the Santa Claus we know today become like this? Well, a gentleman called Thomas Nast created the Santa we know. This was because of advertising for Coca-Cola. The red colour of Coca-Cola was now Santa’s colour.
