Apprenticeships
An apprenticeship is a job that combines paid employment with training and study. Apprentices work for an employer while gaining the knowledge, skills, and qualifications needed for a specific occupation.
Key features of an apprenticeship include:
- You earn a salary while you learn.
- At least 20% of your working time is spent on off-the-job training, which may take place at a college, training provider, or in the workplace.
- You work towards a recognised qualification or occupational standard.
- Apprenticeships are available at different levels, from intermediate (Level 2) through to degree apprenticeships (Levels 6 and 7).
- They are available in a wide range of sectors, including engineering, healthcare, construction, business, digital technology, finance, and many more.
Example
A student interested in engineering could become an engineering apprentice, working for an engineering company four days a week and spending one day a week completing training and coursework. They would gain practical experience, earn a wage, and work towards a recognised qualification.
